The session today was inspired by a client's coaching session and the teachings of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher. Marcus believed in living in harmony with nature, both in the macro sense (universal Nature) and the micro sense (human nature). He emphasized that virtuous actions stem from living in accordance with nature. However, many people fail to do so because they remain trapped in their primal brain's instinctual desires, seeking immediate pleasure, avoiding pain and conserving energy.
To achieve happiness and virtue, we must train the higher thinking brain to override the primal instincts and make decisions based on the long-term benefits aligned with nature. The coaching process involves challenging and replacing unhelpful thought patterns to reconstruct a new worldview that leads to a fulfilling life. The discussion further explores how this framework applies to various aspects of life, such as relationships, addictions, and decision-making, guiding us towards a happier and more purposeful existence.
